Tussy

I bought Tussy today.

What is Tussy, you ask? It seems to be the starter deodorant in the black community…and I thought it was just in my house growing up…who knew.

When the boy was born, he smelled like nothing. Even his poop didn’t stink for a couple of weeks. The only way he actually smelled is if I put something on him (i.e. lotion, powder, freshly washed clothes smelling of Tide) I even noticed when someone held him for an extended period of time, because I could smell that person on him.

As he became a toddler, he started to smell like his food. He often smelled like apple juice, strained sweet potatoes, or green beans.

As a pre-schooler and elementary kid, he smelled like grass or dirt. Nothing offensive, just enough to turn my head and say, “take a shower, Boo”.

Now, at the ripe age of 9.4, something has changed…this s’aggiN on the road to funky! Not quite there, but funky is around the corner. It’s not that musty man smell. He smells sour…that’s the only way I can explain it. Nothing that would offend others, but with my heightened sense of smell (if I had spider sense it would be tingling) I notice it!!!

We’ve reached a milestone on the road to manhood, and I’m having a moment. My baby is growing up.

I bought Tussy today…*pass the tissue…sniffle, sniffle*

HAHAHA! I have quite a few friends who have sons. They say that boys have a “smell” when they are growing up. It’s an offensive smell. I giggle, because you’re experiencing all of those things I remembered them saying within the last year. From what I hear…that smell will hang around, until they’re grown.

I just happened acros your blog via MsSkyBluez. I used to think Tussy was something only in our house too. It is truly a black staple and, in a strange way, a rite of passage. I was glad when I was old enough to decide to switch to somthing else tho’! LOL!

Love your blog so far. Think I’ll go wander through the archives.

    peace & love,
    Pearlie *smile*

Tussy is not just a black staple. It’s been a Greek-Anglo/Saxon staple too. Difficult to find in Rite Aides,CVS and all the large chain stores I have visited in the North East. Usually I can find it in those local independant “Mom & Pop” drugstore. Good stuff, simple non ofensive and probobly won’t ruin your good health. Have a happy!
