Kelis & Queen of the Night

I “get my hands on” Kelis’ album today and I and am I getting some work done while I half listen to it. Well while half working and half listening a familiar melody catches my ear. It’s a sample of Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen (The Queen of the Nights Aria) from the Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte). I am floored and instantly loving the song.

A little history…many moons ago while attending Emory Univeristy I took an elective. What was the elective you may ask….Introduction to Opera. You ask why in the HELL did you take introduction to Opera? Well, I really enjoy all types of music and I knew there was a lot of opera in a lot ofLooney Tunes cartoons. So I thought it would be interesting. It was not only interesting bet the best class I’ve ever taken. You’d be surprised how much opera you were exposed to as a child and not realized it. I was sitting in class thinking “OH SHIT THATS KILL DA WABBIT”. But I heard of a lot on familiar songs and found some new favorites. Die Zauberflöte was one of those new favorites and thought the Queen of the Nights Aria was one of the most beautiful things I’d ever heard. I love it so much I was offended when WHitney Houston came out with the song talking about how she was the Queen of the Night.

Well getting back to Kelis…I really loved Kelis’ first album…yes the one with “Caught Out There” (I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW) ….and still play it every now and then to keep from cussing folks out. Well now….Kelis and the Queen of the Night are on repeat…Track 11 “Like You”.

Now I’m actually going to go buy the album…and you should too.
